The Power of the Witch's Altar Cabinet: How It Enhances Magic

By admin

The Witch's Altar Cabinet is an essential tool for practitioners of witchcraft. It serves as a sacred space where witches can connect with their spiritual practice and perform rituals. The cabinet is typically made from wood and often includes intricate carvings or designs that are significant to the witch's practice. It usually features shelves or compartments to hold various tools, items, and supplies that are used in witchcraft rituals. These may include crystals, herbs, candles, incense, athames (ritual knives), wands, and divination tools such as tarot cards or pendulums. The Witch's Altar Cabinet is a place of power and intention, and each item found within it has a specific purpose and meaning.

I am so weird on this. For me, stories arrive in my head because the characters already exist. It’s like they’re floating around in the ether looking for a writer to tell their story. When they find me, it’s like they whisper in my ear: “Hi, I’m so and so. These are my friends and this is our tale, and you’re going to tell it.” Sometimes I have to dig for the names of supporting cast members, but most names just pop into my head with a fully-formed character attached.

A beautifully written fantasy, iced over with complex magic systems, dangerous undercurrents, and an enemies to lovers romance. It’s full of villages, witch magic and god knives, ancient customs and feasts, and frost stealing across the earth. I also absolutely adored that it has disability rep, with Raina unable to speak verbally and instead using fantasy-sign-language!! More of this in fantasy please 😍🙌🏻 This is definitely not a book to miss if you love thrilling romantic fantasy adventures with complex subplots. Perfect for fans of Naomi Novik and Jennifer L. Armentrout.

Hi Charissa! Thanks for chatting with me today about your novel, The Witch Collector! Can you tell us a little about your publishing journey and how your book went from idea to finished novel?

Hi there! Thanks for having me 🙂 I’ve been writing forever, but haven’t pursued publishing my work until the last five years. Back in 2017, I decided to put together an anthology based around the Wheel of the Year/pagan festivals. The old ways are very interesting to me. The first anthology’s theme was vampires and was set around the Winter Solstice. That book published in December of 2018 and contained short stories, novelettes, and novellas from all genres and many talented authors. I knew that the 2019 volume would center around Mabon/Autumnal Equinox and witchcraft/witches. So the seeds for The Witch Collector were born then. Once I wrote the novella though, I could see the larger story. I published The Witch Collector in the 2019 anthology and later contracted all three novellas with City Owl Press. The plan was to expand The Witch Collector a little and keep all three novellas around 45K words each. At the time, novellas seemed like all I could manage. I was a caregiver to my father, and the time and mental energy to turn the tale into a trilogy of full-length novels didn’t exist. My father passed in 2020, and I had to postpone the novella’s release. In the months after my dad’s death, I poured myself into Raina Bloodgood’s world to help busy my mind as I coped with the loss, and before I knew it, I had a 400-page novel on my hands. Thankfully, my publisher was cool about this and now here we are.

What’s your favourite thing about writing fantasy?

I love creating worlds for readers to slip into. For myself, as a reader and writer, fantasy is an escape. When I’m writing, I get caught up in the story I’m developing. I can’t imagine not having these lush worlds to lose myself inside.

Creating worlds is honestly the best ✨😍 Do you have a favourite moment from your publishing journey so far?

There have been several. It’s tough to choose between getting my first gushy reader review and holding the hardback. I am so thankful for everything that has happened during the unexpected journey of this story.

That first moment of holding your own book 😭👌🏻 So special. How did you choose your character names? Do they ever change as you write?

I am so weird on this. For me, stories arrive in my head because the characters already exist. It’s like they’re floating around in the ether looking for a writer to tell their story. When they find me, it’s like they whisper in my ear: “Hi, I’m so and so. These are my friends and this is our tale, and you’re going to tell it.” Sometimes I have to dig for the names of supporting cast members, but most names just pop into my head with a fully-formed character attached.

That is very very helpful of your characters to do that 😂 So tell us your favourite thing about Raina Bloodgood!

I adore Raina. I suppose my favorite thing is that she is so fierce. She loves and hates with the fire of a thousand suns. She can provide warmth and light or she can burn you to ash. Literally.

It’s impossible not to adore Raina. I loved her from the first page ahhh. Now lastly! Was any chocolate harmed in the making of this novel? 😌

HAHA. Sadly, SO MUCH chocolate was sacrificed to the Writing Gods. You have no idea. But my waistline does 😉

Is it possible to write without chocolate anyway 😪👌🏻 That’s the real question. Thank you so much for the super fun interview, Charissa!! And congrats again on your beautiful novel 🤗.

Reviews for "Using Ritual Tools in a Witch's Altar Cabinet"

1. Emily - 2 stars - I was really excited to read "Witch Sltar Cabinet" based on all the glowing reviews, but I was left feeling disappointed. The story was slow and lacked any real suspense. The characters were one-dimensional and I couldn't bring myself to care about what happened to them. The writing style was also not to my taste, it felt overdone and verbose. Overall, I found the book to be underwhelming and wouldn't recommend it.
2. Michael - 1 star - I couldn't even finish "Witch Sltar Cabinet" because it was just too confusing and poorly written. The plot jumped around without any clear direction and the author seemed to be trying too hard to be mysterious and clever. The dialogue was unnatural and stilted, making it hard to connect with the characters. I was constantly confused about what was happening and eventually gave up trying to understand. I wouldn't recommend this book to anyone.
3. Sarah - 2 stars - "Witch Sltar Cabinet" had an interesting premise, but it fell flat for me. The pacing was off, with long stretches of boredom interrupted by brief moments of action. The main character was unlikable and didn't grow or develop throughout the story. The author tried to include too many subplots that didn't add much to the overall narrative. I found myself not caring about the outcome and was ultimately disappointed with the book.
4. Jack - 2 stars - I was expecting a thrilling and spooky read with "Witch Sltar Cabinet," but it ended up being lackluster. The story was predictable and didn't offer any surprises. The writing was average at best, with cliched phrases and clunky descriptions. The characters lacked depth and I couldn't connect with any of them. Overall, the book failed to capture my interest and I wouldn't recommend it to fans of the genre who are looking for a truly captivating read.
5. Rachel - 1 star - "Witch Sltar Cabinet" was a complete waste of time. The plot was convoluted and nonsensical, making it difficult to follow along. The ending left me feeling unsatisfied and irritated. The writing style was overly descriptive, bogging down the story with unnecessary details. The dialogue was stiff and unnatural, making it hard to believe in the characters or their interactions. I couldn't find any redeeming qualities in this book and would advise others to steer clear.
